ridgewing guitars

This beautiful set of investment-cast aluminum frames was made by master craftsman Jay Lees, General Manager of Nu-Cast, Inc. of Londonderry NH. Using the exact same CAD model used to make Ridgewing, Jay made hollow 3D-printed patterns for each frame. These patterns were dipped in progressively coarser slurries of literally ground-up rubies (chromium-doped aluminium oxide), each layer being allowed to dry before the next. Once fully coated and dried, the patterns are fired in an oven to almost 1000ºC. This sinters the coating and burns out the hollow patterns. Then molten aluminum is poured into the space left by the burned-out patterns. When cool, the coating is broken off the parts, which are hand-finished to remove sprues. The holes at the front of the neck pocket accept threaded bushings for micrometer set screws which make contact with the “nuggie” hard points on the end of the neck. The micrometer set screws are adjusted by ball-end Allen wrench from the back (not visible) for precise adjustment of neck yaw angle and overall intonation.
