The guitar has been around for a very long time in various forms. The body shape has evolved as materials and construction techniques have allowed an ever-larger body size. Notably however, the neck is depicted in these most ancient images as full-size and fretted. These physical characteristics demonstrate an ancient recognition of the ability of a long, highly-tensioned string to provide its loudest sound with the greatest harmonic content. The greater the harmonic content, the more a stringed instrument is able to produce tonal content in the frequency range used to convey word meaning in human speech, and in yet higher frequencies to convey hard-wired emotional content including pain, ecstasy and fear. More aptly considered a “guitar religion”, the guitar’s role in human affairs since pre-historic times has been as a Shaman’s tool enabling them to enter a transcendental trance state where they can escape their physical body, ascend into the cosmos and acquire god-like powers. The rock-star’s signature heroic pose seen here is a deeply ingrained behavioral cue to the shaman’s audience that they can now join the shaman and come along for the cosmic ride. In this sense, the guitar is humankind’s first interstellar space ship.
