The Ridgewing shop is pretty small, and keeping the work environment livable took extra measures. For general fume/dust abatement, the near half of the second window (closed in this picture) had a summer room fan taken apart and installed into a piece of plywood in the window frame. Any task involving serious dust and fume creation was done on the workbench directly under this fan.  But for certain tasks even this was inadequate or you couldn’t get the work near enough to the fan.

 

So the guys cobbled together this great little super-sucker system, whose intake was a ten-inch funnel on a long moveable hose inside the shop, and which connected to a hole in the window plywood insert.  An outdoor hose mated with this one at the window and fed the intake to the cardboard box seen here, within which crouched a little screaming banshee of a mini shop vac. The cardboard box served to both keep snow out of the vac and cut down on its decibels a bit so as to not scare off any more of the local game than was absolutely necessary. The net result was that inside the shop you had a very portable, quiet, high-flow vacuum fixture for “spot work”. For example capturing the exhaust of a router, which would otherwise spray dust and chips all over and throughout its indoor neighborhood, or catching the debris from that most miserable of tasks - the hand-filing of hardened carbon-fiber. Carbon-fiber dust makes fiberglass seem downright pleasant by comparison.
