November 3, 2014 – Time to organize the shop. After four months of design, experiment and mold making, we were finally about to start making real instrument parts, and we needed more bench space. The roll-around bench with the little drawer holder was built to fit under the bench Scott is leaning on, giving the front room of the shop six workbenches for three guys in a space measuring 12’ x 25’.  The back room, measuring 12’ x 20’, had all the dust-making power equipment, plus a workbench from an electronics surplus store with at least a dozen power outlets serving as my “office”. Dust control was a big shop vac equipped with a HEPA filter with a long flexible hose that got dragged around and attached to whatever machine was being used. Still, there was a lot of dust leakage from the machines while operating, and a dust mask had to be worn most of the time. Answering the phone required going out in the driveway. The Epson B-size printer lived on the shelf of the workbench in in a large plastic bag. Totally crude, but it all worked after a fashion. The window behind Scott ended up being fitted with the re-purposed business end of a reciprocating room fan from the “D-Store” (aka New Boston town dump), in front of which the most noxious tasks were carried out (literally), such as filing or sanding carbon fiber, or cleaning something with acetone. Using this trusty fan religiously kept the front room remarkably clean, while I wheezed and sneezed in the back room.
